Brown backs down in expenses row

By michael

Exempting MPs’ expenses details from the Freedom of Information Act has now been dropped!

But what on earth was Prime Minister Gordon Brown doing in actually  approving of this measure in the first place!

Talk about being out of touch with the electorate!

Anyone who spent more than a few moments thinking about the consequences of such a plan would realise the opposition that this measure would invoke.

The Inland Revenue demand that everyone else in the country has to produce documentation to justify claiming back even the smallest item of expenditure!

Proposing that MPs would be exempt from fully accounting for their expenses shows that New Labour see themselves as more important than everyone else. Ordinary people have to spend a lot of time and effort getting their accounts sorted out whilst MPs wouldn’t have to bother!

The Conservatives accused ministers of a “U-turn” while the Lib Dems said it was a “humiliating climbdown”.

Of course both of the above statements is true. But back to my first question, what on earth was the Prime Minister doing in actually  approving of this measure in the first place!
